Episode of Emperor Showa①

Episode of Emperor Showa (1)
On September 27, 1945, shortly before the Emperor Showa’s trip to Japan, he visited MacArthur with only one interpreter.
At that time, GHQ had three policies toward the Emperor.
The first was to drag him to the Tokyo Trials and hang him.
The second was to flatter the Japanese Communist Party and have him bled to death under the People’s Tribunal.
Third, they would exile him to China and murder him in secret.
In any case, GHQ was determined to make The Εmperor “nothing”.
The Emperor Showa visited MacArthur, the head of GHQ, with his only interpreter.
MacArthur naturally assumed that The Εmperor would come to beg for his life.
He thought so, so MacArthur greeted The Emperor without even getting up from the couch with a madros pipe in his mouth.
The madros pipe is also known as a corn pipe, and since corn was the main product of the United States, this pipe was a symbol of the United States.
By holding it in his mouth, he showed that “we have defeated you”.
In front of MacArthur, The Emperor stood erect and unmoving in a posture of international courtesy, and after a firm greeting, he said,
I am the Emperor of Japan. I am responsible for all matters related to the war. As long as everything has been done under my command, there is not a single war criminal in Japan. I am prepared to submit myself to any and all forms of capital punishment, including, of course, hanging.
Since there was no prior agreement on this, the interpreter was at a loss as to whether or not he should translate it as it was said.
However, The Emperor continues.
However, the 80 million innocent people of Japan have no homes to live in, no clothes to wear, and no food to eat, and their situation is deeply worrisome. Therefore, I ask that Your Excellency, the Most Wondrous Majesty, please take care of the food, clothing, and shelter of the people of this country.
When MacArthur heard this, he was astonished.
Whenever a country loses a war, heads of state in any part of the world will sacrifice their own people and beg for their lives in order to save their own lives.
Furthermore, they flee the country.
This is the common sense of the world.
Despite this, the Showa Emperor said without hesitation that he would accept any extreme punishment, even hanging, because he was responsible for all the crimes, so he asked to be executed and in return save everyone.
MacArthur put the madrone pipe he was holding in his mouth on the desk.
Then he got up from his chair, approached The Emperor himself, and asked him to sit down in his embrace, and ordered to offer The Emperor a cup of coffee because he seemed excited, and this time he stood in front of Ηis Majesty, who was sitting on him as if he were a subject, and this time MacArthur stood erect and immobile, and said
Such a man was The Emperor!”
Such a man was The Emperor!”
He repeated these words twice.
And MacArthur said
I wish I had been born a Japanese.
I know you are inconvenienced, Majesty.
If there is anything I can do, please let me know.
The Emperor stood up, tears streaming down his face.
I am clinging to the sleeve of His Excellency MacArthur with my life.
What hope do I have?
I ask only for the food, clothing, and shelter of the people.
After this, MacArthur accompanied Majesty to the entrance and opened the car door with his own hands to see him off.
Then, rushing up the stairs, he issued a new order that changed the policy of GHQ 180 degrees.
This is a fact left behind in history.
I am sure many of you know this story because it is famous, but hearing it again, it is very moving.
Such a man was The Emperor!
I think MacArthur’s words say it all.
The Emperor considers the people as “Omitakara,” and this spirit has not changed since the founding of the nation of Kunitokotachi.
I am very happy to be born in such a country.
