この時の天皇は女性の称徳天皇でした。
この時、和気清麻呂（わけのきよまろ）という文官がいました。
戦前・戦中までは、武官としては楠木正成（くすのきまさしげ）、文官としては和気清麻呂が日本の二大巨塔でした。
和気清麻呂はお札の顔にもなった人物です。
そこで天皇は、和気清麻呂に本当に大分の神社でそのようなご信託を道鏡が受けたのかを確認してほしいとお願いをしました。
道鏡は出発前の和気清麻呂を捕まえて「おまえ、どういう回答を持ってくればいいのか分かってるよな？」と脅しをかけました。
また、「私が天皇になった暁には、お前に大臣の位を与えてやろう」と誘惑をしました。
道鏡に逆らえば命がどうなるかわかりません。
仏教は仏様が後ろについているので、仏様の罰を受け地獄に落ちてしまう・・・という恐怖がありました。
和気清麻呂はその神社でご神託を受けました。
神様は「そんなものは真っ赤な嘘だ。あくまでも天皇というのは、天照大神から万世一系で脈々と受け継がれて来たことが一番大切なことであって、権力者が天皇の位に就くということはあってはならないことだ」とおっしゃいました。
清麻呂が朝廷に帰り、天皇、道鏡、その他大勢の役人がある前で、事の次第を発表しました。
それまで勝ち誇ったような顔をしていた道鏡の表情が、みるみる変わったそうです。
この一件で道鏡は立場を追われ、流されました。
こうして、元の天皇を中心とした、安定した日本を守り抜こうということになりました。

The emperor at this time was a woman, Emperor Shoutoku.
At this time, there was a civil official named Wake-no-Kiyomaro.
Before and during the war, Kusunoki Masashige was the military leader and Wake-no-Kiyomaro was the civil official.
Wake-no-Kiyomaro was also the face of banknotes.
Therefore, the Emperor asked Wake-no-Kiyomaro to confirm whether Dokyo really received such an entrustment at the Oita shrine.
Dokyo caught Wake-no Kiyomaro before he departed and said, “You know what kind of answer I need you to bring me, don’t you?” He threatened him.
If you disobey Dokyo, he does not know what will happen to his life.
Since Buddhism has the Buddha behind it, there was a fear that he would be punished by the Buddha and end up in hell….
Wake-no-Kiyomaro received an oracle at the shrine.
The god said, “Such a thing is a complete lie. The most important thing is that the position of emperor has been passed down through the generations from Amaterasu to the present day, and that no one in power should ever assume the position of emperor”.
Kiyomaro returned to the Imperial Court and announced the situation in the presence of the Emperor, Dokyo, and many other officials.
The look of pride on Dokyo’s face, which had been triumphant until then, changed suddenly.
Because of this incident, Dokyo was forced to leave his position and was exiled.
Thus, the decision was made to protect a stable Japan centered on the original emperor.
