There is an English version in the second half.

Today, August 11, is Mountain Day.
What do you think the purpose of this day is?
It is said that the purpose of this day is to “take the opportunity to become familiar with mountains and appreciate their benefits”.
In the past, local governments decided on their own mountain days, but later, the Japan Alpine Club and other mountaineering organizations formed a council to establish a “Mountain Day,” and then a bipartisan Diet members’ caucus was established, and in 2016, August 11 was established as “Mountain Day”
I understand the purpose of the day, but I do not know its origin or why it is on August 11.
I’ve heard that the 8 in “8” in Knaji character reminds people of the shape of a mountain, and the 11 stands for the trees that line the mountain, but sorry, in my opinion,
it is definitely not true.
When I hear this kind of origin, I can’t help but think, “Have the Japanese people fallen so far?”
It’s too much of a stretch.
Or perhaps the origin itself is true, but holidays were not originally decided for such a simple reason.
There is a good reason why the day became a holiday.
It seems to me that the reason was simply that “there were no holidays in August, so let’s make one”.
As evidence, there was a proposal to make the holiday on the 12th, but unfortunately? the tragic crash of a Japan Airlines jumbo jet on that day led to the 11th.
The idea was simply to make the holiday longer by combining it with Obon holidays.
What?
I can’t keep my mouth shut.
Although they are now called national holidays, they were originally “festival days,” a day on which religious ceremonies such as court rituals and shrine festivals were held, and were designated as national holidays.
Therefore, they are called “the festival day”.
Kigensetsu→ National Foundation Day
Shunkikoreisai → Vernal Equinox Day
Emperor Showa’s Birthday → Showa Day
Shukikoreisai→ Autumnal equinox Day
Meijisetsu (birthday of Emperor Meiji) → Culture Day
Niinamesai→ Labor Thanksgiving Day
Shunkikoreisai and Shukikoreisai in spring and autumn are the days when successive emperors are enshrined.
Since there are too many emperors, they should be held twice a year, once in spring and once in fall… In a casual way, these days are positioned as such.
Older people still call it a “Saijitsu (festival day),” but it is a remnant of the fact that it used to be called a “Saijitsu” instead of a “Shukujitsu (national holiday)”.
I still sometimes call it a “Saijitsu” myself.
Or, in my case, it is intentional (laugh).
Sports Day is a little different, but it was also established to commemorate the day when the Tokyo Olympics were held, which was a special time in Japan at the time, as the Olympics were held only 19 years after the postwar reconstruction. I think it was also significant that the Olympics were held only 19 years after the postwar reconstruction of Japan.
The Olympics at that time could be said to be a symbol of postwar reconstruction.
It makes sense that the day was established to commemorate the Olympics.
On the other hand, Mountain Day is a day to “take the opportunity to become familiar with mountains”.
…….doesn’t that sound a bit frivolous?
Of course, mountains are very important in the lives of Japanese people, and it is not too much to say that we have been living with mountains since the distant past, and that Japan exists today because our ancestors planted trees and protected mountains.
In fact, if you look at the areas that were once considered “civilized” but have now turned into deserts, you can see how much our ancestors cherished the mountains, but it all smells a little fishy.
The fact that a mountaineering organization is involved in the establishment of this day is also something of a mystery.
I believe that the reason for the establishment of this day is a complication between mountaineering organizations and politicians who want to increase the number of climbers.
Am I thinking too much?
To begin with, the current national holiday law was enacted in 1948.
As you probably know by now, it was after the Greater East Asia War ended in 1945.
Japan was still under the rule of GHQ.
The change from “Saijitsu” to “Shukujitsu” as mentioned above was also the work of GHQ.
After the Greater East Asia War, the U.S. was really afraid of the Japanese.
Americans witnessed the Banzai Assault, Kamikaze Pilots, and other things that Americans could not even begin to comprehend.
The War Guilt Information Program (WGIP) was created to “make sure that such a scary people will never be able to defy the West again,” and various “policies to eliminate the Japanese” were implemented.
Patriots were expelled, leftists who had been jailed were released and placed in key positions, the Board of Education and the Japan Education Association were created to control the education world, all newspapers and magazines were censored by GHQ, all patriotic books were burned, and the people were thoroughly brainwashed to believe that Japan had caused the war of aggression.
In the past, people used to meet at shrines, but now they gather at community centers.
Some strange things were done, such as banning martial arts and tokonoma (alcove).
Even the ritual prayers were changed.
The ritual prayers performed at shrines today are slightly different from those originally performed in the ancient Shinto tradition.
One of the “bonehead policies” is the National Holidays Law.
GHQ believed that the root of the strength of the Japanese people was the connection between the emperor and the people.
Therefore, they tried to separate the emperor from the people.
Holidays were also targeted.
You can already see why by looking at the names of the holidays I mentioned above.
I think the reason why it seems to be only a complication mentioned earlier is also due to the fact that they are completely unaware of the original meaning of such national holidays.
It was GHQ that made these unfortunate people the “overwhelming majority”.
There are some Japanese who are aware of the horror of being manipulated by education and information, but they are still in the minority.
The new Corona is clearly an “infodemic” in which people were manipulated by information.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is not unilaterally Russia’s fault either.
The information that people need to know from various sources is controlled by the West, and unless we seek information ourselves, we will never receive correct information or information that is opposite to what the West has to offer.
If we do not change our education and the way we get information, we will continue to see those unfortunate Japanese who establish strange holidays in June and December in the future.
